Horsley Woodhouse Primary School

Sport & Funding

Background
In April 2013, the Government announced new funding of £150 million for physical education and sport, to be used to improve the quality of PE and sports provision. Funding was secured for the academic year 2019-2020.

Schools are free to determine how best to use the funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of. This year the government has released £16000 a year plus £10 per head for the improvement of the provision of physical education and sport (in the academic year 2019/2020) to improve PE and Sport in Horsley Woodhouse Primary School.

At Horsley Woodhouse Primary School a large amount of our funding is spent on the affiliation and partnership with Amber Valley Schools Sports Partnership (AVSSP), who provide a range of services and opportunities to support school's delivery of PE, sport and physical activity. The school is proud to be a part of the AVSSP team for the opportunities, support and guidance they provide.

Here at Horsley Woodhouse, we also try to encourage our pupils to stay active while outside of school hours. We do this by promoting local clubs, activity hubs and leisure providers through various methods including assemblies, fliers, facility usage and extra-curricular links. These external providers include Central Soccer, Derby Dodgeball and a range of local martial arts clubs. To encourage pupils to stay active over the holidays, we also actively promote AVSSP’s Holiday Sports Camps which take place at local leisure centres and offer low cost, high quality sports activities for all pupils. These camps can also be subsidised by the school through Sport Premium or Pupil Premium funding to allow the students most in need to attend.

More information about AVSSP can be found at their website here.

Amber Valley School Sports Partnership

Horsley Woodhouse Primary School accesses sports competitions across Amber Valley with other local schools.

Children have been to various different competitions, including dodgeball, football, athletics and gymnastics. We try to ensure that competitions link with our own curriculum subjects to enhance children's skills in a competitive environment.

Children have loved taking part in AVSSP's 'Tough Runner', which involves a challenging obstacle course. This ends with an exciting 'slip and slide' finish.

Through our work with Amber Valley School Sport Partnership we are also able to access regular staff CPD and best practice sharing, support with PE assessment and data collection, assistance with running intra-school competitions and sports days and even guidance when applying for awards and accreditation.

Embark Sporting Events

Our children enjoy regular competitive and celebratory events with Embark Federation, including a dance festival and an annual football competition.

Other Sporting and Physical Activities
Every year, children in Upper Key Stage 2 access Bikeablility training, which teaches them how to be safe on the road and gives them a chance to learn a vital life skill. Children also have the opportunity to participate in a residential at Lea Green, which offers outdoor learning opportunities in a safe environment. Throughout the year, all children access our Forest School provision in our excellent surroundings. We have a qualified Forest School Practitioner, who leads whole-class and small group learning. Furthermore, children in Lower Key Stage 2 have the opportunity to access high-quality swimming provision at William Gregg Leisure Centre in Heanor. Many of of our children leave Year 6 being able to swim 25 metres or further.
