Sport & Funding
In April 2013, the Government announced new funding of £150 million for physical
education and sport, to be used to improve the quality of PE and sports provision. Funding
was secured for the academic year 2019-2020.
Schools are free to determine how best to use the funding to improve the quality and
breadth of PE and sport provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that
all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.
This year the government has released £16000 a year plus £10 per head for the
improvement of the provision of physical education and sport (in the academic year
2019/2020) to improve PE and Sport in Horsley Woodhouse Primary School.

At Horsley Woodhouse Primary School a large amount of our funding is spent on the
affiliation and partnership with Amber Valley Schools Sports Partnership (AVSSP), who
provide a range of services and opportunities to support school's delivery of PE, sport and
physical activity. The school is proud to be a part of the AVSSP team for the opportunities,
support and guidance they provide.
Horsley Woodhouse Primary School is affiliated to Amber Valley School Sport Partnership.
Through our affiliation, the school is able to access PE planning resources for each year
group, themed around 6 different sports. The plans are high quality and easy to follow,
allowing for staff to plan lessons to suit our school’s facilities and students. Each lesson
includes fun, progressive activities from an effective warm-up to a competitive activity with
the chance to differentiate learning to support students who are high/low achievers.
Lessons also include technical and tactical teaching points allowing staff to challenge
students in a variety of ways. The PE planning we use also includes a PE assessment tracker
giving staff the ability to efficiently assess students as Emerging, Expected or Exceeding from
a physical, social and emotional standpoint.
Our affiliation package also includes a large number of inter-school events & competitions in
a wide variety of sports. These events are categorised to encourage as many students as
possible to represent their school throughout a given year and to help our staff select
appropriate students to compete. Our students love taking part in these events and are
always really excited to represent their school!
The school also accesses Bikeability and Learn 2 Ride training which gives many of our
students a chance to learn a vital life skill and increase their confidence on their bike as well
as work towards earning their certificate!
Through our work with Amber Valley School Sport Partnership we are also able to access
regular staff CPD and best practice sharing, support with PE assessment and data collection,
assistance with running intra-school competitions and sports days and even guidance when
applying for awards and accreditation.
Here at Horsley Woodhouse, we also try to encourage our pupils to stay active while outside
of school hours. We do this by promoting local clubs, activity hubs and leisure providers
through various methods including assemblies, fliers, facility usage and extra-curricular
links. These external providers include Central Soccer, Derby Dodgeball and a range of local
martial arts clubs. To encourage pupils to stay active over the holidays, we also actively
promote AVSSP’s Holiday Sports Camps which take place at local leisure centres and offer
low cost, high quality sports activities for all pupils. These camps can also be subsidised by
the school through Sport Premium or Pupil Premium funding to allow the students most in
need to attend.
More information about AVSSP can be found at their website here.
To support the delivery of PE, Horsley Woodhouse Primary School accesses Amber Valley
School Sport Partnership’s Coaching programme to bring in a specialist PE deliverer. Mr
Hughes is a specialist in PE and sport holding Level 2 sports qualifications and works alongside
our schools teaching staff to deliver high quality PE lessons to the whole school. This team
teaching not only allows the children to have a great experience of PE but also allows our
staff to learn new ideas and become more confident in teaching PE themselves, improving
the quality of PE across the school. Utilising a sports specialist also allows our school to host
structured, high quality after-school and lunchtime clubs in a range of exciting sports such
as Archery, Boxercise, Fencing, Dodgeball, Football and more.
Since 2018 our school has attended fourteen sporting events and competitions, giving our
children the opportunity to compete with and against pupils from other schools in Amber
Valley in athletics, handball, dodgeball, football and swimming. The children loved taking
part and representing their school and even returned with a certificate each for their
The school even managed to win three dodgeball competitions over the last couple of years
to add some silverware to the school trophy cabinet! We were incredibly proud of the
In total 36% of pupils in the school have represented the school in a competition, something
we aim to build on again next year.
All our year 6 pupils have completed Bikeability training which helps them learn how to
effectively and safely ride a bike and increases confidence in doing so!
At Horsley Woodhouse we are extremely proud of all our swimmers starting from year
three onwards and are always ready to celebrate all our swimming achievements with lots
of awards and certificates. This year 90% of pupils were able to swim 25metres or more and
were also able to achieved their National Curriculum award in swimming.
Our after-school sports clubs have been really popular this year with 52% of students taking
part in many different sports including athletics, archery, boxercise, dodgeball, table tennis,
football and creative dance.
