Horsley Woodhouse Primary School

Class 4

Welcome to Class 4!

We are a class of year 5 and 6 children, giving everything we’ve got to the final years of our primary school experience. We enjoy our learning with Mr Rickels and Mrs Chapman and are supported by Mrs O'Boyle, Mrs Ufton and Mrs Kirkley. Our hard work sets an example for the younger children around us and we work very hard to embody the values of our school. As the oldest children in the school, we love using all of the skills we have been taught over our primary school journey!

Have a look below at our year so far and what we are currently learning about!

February 2023

Our topic this term is Saving the Environment. We have learnt about how important the water cycle is, what the Greenhouse Effect is and how it is affecting Climate change.

We studied the work of artist, Darrell Wakelam, who creates sculptures using recycled materials. His ethos is that 3D art can be beautiful and made from our waste.

We then collected recycled materials from home and created instructions to make our sea creatures.

We then used the various techniques that Darrell uses, including using masking tape, scissors and scoring cardboard to create our incredible 3D art.

We practised mixing different colours then added these to our sea creatures.

We are so proud of our creations and it is an important reminder of how beautiful, yet important the sea life is to our ever-changing planet.

December 2022

This term, we have looked at the build up towards WWII and its devastating effects. We read the book 'Once' which is about a boy called Felix. He is Jewish and living in a Polish orphanage during the war.

It tells the story of Felix (an optimistic young boy), who leaves on a quest to find his mother and father and slowly finds out the true horrors awaiting him.

The children have learnt about Hitler's rise to power, the Blitz, evacuees, how the war ended and the Holocaust.

We looked at a wartime artist (Harvey Dunn), who created the famous piece called 'Over the Wire'. We practised with charcoal pencils created different effects using rubbers, water on a paintbrush and tissues. We then used his picture as inspiration to create our own charcoal masterpieces, using different photos from the war to inspire us.

Our display shows the timeline of events leading up to WWII between the train tracks, leading up to Auschwitz.
